Two Copywriters, Two Clients, 30 Days

New, secret copy mastermind coming soon...?

Hey friend! Welcome to Storey Time. If you’re new here, add your email below to make sure you receive my next issue in your inbox.

Can’t land a client?

You’re not alone.

Yesterday, I ran a poll on X.

Was curious how many copywriters in my audience had landed clients already.

Almost half said they landed zero (48.5%).

20.2% have gotten free clients.

18.2% have gotten 1-3 paid clients.

And only 13.1% have got to full-time already.

Looking at the data, I realized…

A whopping 68.7% haven’t landed a single paid client yet.

Want to know the main reason?

They have no idea how to find clients.

And if they can find them, they have no idea how to properly outreach to them.

So, if you’re part of the 87% who aren’t making a full-time income yet…

Then listen up.

It’s time you get some proven tools in your belt to start outreaching.

That is, if you really want to quit your job and earn thousands every month as a copywriter.

This past week, two of my 1:1 writing mentorship students landed their first copy client.

But, instead of hiding these tactics behind a course, I’m just going to give them to you for free.

Why?

Because I truly want you to get to full-time.

Oh, and one more thing…

They didn’t land “free” clients.

They cashed in on paid clients.

Here are 3 tactics we used that got them their first client in less than a month:

1. Warm Outreach

We didn't go cold.

We went warm.

The fastest way you'll land a client online is with warm outreach.

You can do this in 30 days.

But remember… The fastest way you'll land a client overall is by reaching out to people you know in real life.

This means connecting with your:

  • Friends

  • Family

  • Co-workers

The trust you've built with your IRL relationships will far outshine the lack of experience you have as a new writer.

Read that again.

The trust you've built with your friends, family, and co-workers in real life will far outshine the lack of experience you have as a new writer.

Leverage it and get paid quick.

One of my mentorship students got a quick win by reaching out to someone he knew locally with a construction company.

He landed a job for a website copy rewrite.

2. Free Samples & Loom Videos

Stop asking.

Start giving.

This is a key part of the strategy I teach my mentorship students.

If you want to stand out when outreaching, don't just ask someone if you can work for them.

Instead, start giving free value upfront.

I got my mentorship students to audit their prospect's copy before even talking about working together. They gave them free tips on how to improve their copy — right in the DMs.

Sometimes, they even made a Loom video to deliver the tips (to stand out even more).

In many cases, they even gave free samples of copy customized to their prospect's business.

The result?

Paid clients.

People are scared of offering free work, but it's the quickest path to paid work.

3. Follow Ups

If you ask and don't get...

Ask again.

Reaching out isn't a one-and-done game.

Just because you reached out once and got a "no" (or you were ghosted) doesn't mean your outreach was a failure.

Some people aren't ready the moment you want them to buy. Sometimes they're busy. Sometimes they forget.

So, what do you do?

  • Remind them

  • Say "hi" again

  • Be a human being

And follow up with them.

One of my students reached out to a guy in the first three days of our 30-day mentorship.

He kept the conversation going with him all the way to the end of the month. He finally got a booked call with him on day 29.

P.S. He ended up getting 4 booked calls in the final week.

He closed one of them last weekend, and is in the process of closing the other ones this week.

To recap:

1. Reach to a warm audience.

2. Give free value (tips, samples).

3. Follow up with your prospects regularly.

Until next time,

Are you struggling to land clients?

Or… you just don’t know where to start?

Maybe you need extra help with your copy?

Well, this past weekend, my 1:1 mentorship doors closed for the month.

But…

I’ve had 4 copywriters recently ask me to start a paid copy mastermind:

A small, exclusive group of dedicated copywriters levelling up together…

On the journey to $5k/month and beyond.

Led by yours truly.

If this is something you’d be interested in being a part of, reply to this email with the word “mastermind" now.

I have a few people wanting to do this already.

Might start it next week.

Might not.

If I did, I’d likely cap it at 8 spots.

Four of which would likely be filled in a day (if I told the writers who asked me already that I’m starting one.)

P.S. Here’s a little hint at the kind of results that can happen when you go all-in, take consistent action, and learn from those who have gone before you:

My mentorship student Chase is on a roll. He just quit his job 2 weeks ago and just landed another email client on retainer two days ago — for $1,500 USD/mo.

So, if you missed out on the 1:1 mentorship but still want to fast-track to full-time as a copywriter…
