Three Quick & Easy 10-Min Copywriting Exercises

Practice these daily to crush the competition

Time to crush another guru mantra.

So you’re a new copywriter.

You’re learning, growing, and ready to make this freelance copywriting thing your path to freedom.

Trust me, you’ve picked one of the best paths possible.

But, the problem is?

Figuring out how to write good copy.

The reality is, if you want to convince internet strangers to give you:

  • $1,000

  • $3,000

  • $5,000

  • $10,000

  • Or more..

…Every single month…

You need to build a skill that is WORTH thousands.

You see… most gurus will just tell you:

“Just practice writing copy more, bro.”

And they’ll leave you in the dust to go and figure it out on your own.

Not fun!

You need to know HOW to write better copy.

So, I’ll help you out a little today.

Instead of just telling you to “practice more copy,” I’ll show you what you should work on daily to get better in just 30 days:

#1: Power Writing Sessions

First things first.

You need to build up your broad writing skills.

Want to know how Michael Jordan became one of the greatest shots in NBA history?

He took more shots than the other guys.

The same goes for you with copywriting.

Time spent in the craft = mastery.

So, do what I did when I first started learning copy (that helped me quit my job in 3 months and hit $9,000/month at the 12-month mark)…

Every morning, wake up, grab a cup of coffee, open up Google Docs on your laptop…

And JUST WRITE.

Don’t worry about a topic, prompt, or agenda.

Just set a timer for 30 or 60 minutes…

(And if all you have in the morning is 10 minutes…)

And go for it!

Think of this like a diary or a journal. Just write whatever comes to mind.

I found during these power writing sessions, I was often writing my goals and dreams and reiterating to myself why I was becoming a copywriter.

If you can’t figure that out, just pick a prompt and write. “Today I’ll write about my favorite thing from my childhood, today I’ll write about why copywriting is so awesome, today I’ll write about my thoughts about x, y, z.”

#2: Practice Copy Frameworks (PAS & AIDA)

Next up, you’ve gotta learn copy frameworks.

These are simple step-by-step outlines you can use to write copy that flows and converts an audience well.

My favorite is PAS: Problem, Agitate, Solution.

Start by diving into the problem, agitate the problem by tapping into the consequences of not solving it, then offer a solution (your product or service).

Works great when your reader is running from some kind of pain in health, wealth, or relationships and needs a solution.

The most versatile is AIDA: Attention, Interest, Desire, Action.

Grab someone’s attention, build up interest with unique facts, numbers, uses of the product, build desire by diving into the benefits, and then ask for them to do something (i.e. buy the product here).

When you’re brand new, you should intentionally practice these frameworks every day (and use them to structure all of your copy).

For this, you want a prompt to start with. Go find a product or service online. Or start with something in your home you bought recently. Pick that as your target product/service. Then follow PAS or AIDA and write.

#3: Hand Copy Sales Letters & Ads

If you want to be great, you have to study the greats.

Copywriting isn’t a “traditional path” skill.

  • We don’t learn it in school

  • We don’t learn it in college

  • We don’t learn it on the job

So, how do we learn it?

The same way you learn anything if you want to be great:

You study those who have succeeded with it.

And replicate their success.

So, go to Google. Type in a legendary copywriter’s name PLUS “sales letter” or “ad”:

  • Gary Halbert sales letter

  • David Ogilvy ad

  • John caples advertisement

  • Claude Hopkins ad

  • Gary Bencivenga sales letter

  • Dan Kennedy sales letter

Then, pick one.

Grab a pen and paper (it’s best to do this by hand).

And write out their copy word for word.

Don’t try to improve it.

Write it out exactly as they did.

Then, analyze it after and ask yourself why it works.

Study it.

When you write words that have sold millions…

You’ll automatically learn to write words that can sell millions.

Now, go and practice copy!

At least now you’ll have 3 of the top exercises so you have no more excuses!

Ideally, you should be spending at least 30 minutes per day writing.

If you want to get to $5,000/month this year, 60 minutes minimum.

If you want to go beyond that this year (to $6,000-$10,000/month), then write as much as you possibly can (like I did in my first year).

I find it’s best to write first thing in the morning no matter what.

But ideally, you should be writing, studying, and learning all throughout the day.

Morning, afternoon, evening…

  • Whenever you get a lunch break, do one of the 3 exercises

  • On your drive home from work, listen to a copy podcast or audiobook

  • In the evening (instead of binging Netflix), go through a course or book

When you make studying and practicing copy your lifestyle…

You’ll eventually find yourself living the lifestyle of a successful copywriter:

  • Making six figures per year

  • Setting your own hours

  • Waking up whenever you want

  • Not having to ask for time off work

  • Being able to travel whenever and wherever you like

  • Working on the projects you love

  • Saying no to the projects you don’t love

  • And finally calling the shots in your life

If you’re ready to make that a reality sooner than later…

Land your first (or next) client in 30 days

On Saturday, Jan 18th, you’ll learn the same step-by-step outreach system my copywriting students use (that’s landing ~70% of them their first client in 30 days).

The workshop isn’t about honing your copy skills. Instead, it’s completely focused on OUTREACH.

So if you haven’t been working on your copy for at least a few weeks, you’re better off nailing your copy skills first.

But, if you’ve been practicing your copy for a while and are ready to start landing clients…

Then you get full access to the system and a 30-min live Q&A after to ask me any questions about copy, landing clients, and building your business to six figures per year (like I did in just 12 months).

Only a few tickets left. Doors close tomorrow. Then we go LIVE on Saturday at 1 pm EST.

P.S. One of my students just landed a copywriting client yesterday with the “Sniper Bomb” system.
