It was December 2018.

The freezing rain was pounding outside my studio apartment.

Vancouver, Canada.

Cold. Rainy. And always gloomy.

My safe place was inside my 500 square foot rectangular prison.

A glimmer of hope filled my wife’s eyes before slowly fading back to the reality of our income… and work… and location challenges.

A few days earlier at church, we shared our dream to travel the world to Australia (my wife’s favorite country) and to Thailand (my dream destination).

Our friend said, “Just book the flights. You’ll figure out the rest.”

“Yeah, that would be amazing, wouldn’t it?”

But deep down, I knew I wouldn’t pull the plug.

For some reason though, bringing up Australia was different this time. Seeing my wife’s eyes light up before fading away did something.

It sparked something inside me.

Sadness? Realizing I was taking away her dream?

Anger? Wishing my boss’ promises of freedom weren’t empty?

Frustration? That I wasn’t the man I was supposed to be?

Whatever it was, it worked.

2 minutes later, I pulled the trigger.

June 2019.

We were doing it.

I booked the one-way flights from Vancouver, Canada to Sydney, Australia.
