My first client changed my life

Landing my first copywriting client wasn’t glamorous.

It was February 2019.

I had just spent the previous six weeks grinding away:

• Waking up at 5-6 am every morning for “power writing” sessions

• Listening to copywriting podcasts on the 1.5 hour commute to work in rainy Vancouver

• Trying to stay hopeful while exhausting myself at my 12-hour day job

• Coming home from work drained from the long work hours and choosing to flip open my laptop to write some more copy (rather than mindlessly scroll on social media)

• Eating dinner with my wife, then going through my copywriting books and courses (rather than Netflix and video games)

Not to mention, my social life took a hit. My weekends went from hanging with friends and family to hunting down clients online however I could.

Those first 6 weeks weren’t easy by any means.

I had to give up a lot.

I thought of quitting a few times.

But then that fateful day came…

When I opened up Gmail and saw what I thought could have only been a scam.

Frantic, I check the email address to verify this is actually an email from Fiverr.

It is.

It’s legit.

“Jenn!!! We did it!! I landed a client! It’s for a blog post!”

“What?? What are you talking about?! Why are you yelling?!”

“I got an order on Fiverr. I landed my first client! IT WORKED!”

When I think of the top 10 moments in my life:

• The day I gave my life to God

• The day I asked my wife to marry me

• The day I married my wife

• The day my first daughter was born

• The day my second daughter was born

THIS day comes close to those.

The day I landed my first copywriting client…

It’s hard not to include it beside these life-changing days.

I remember when I saw the notification in Gmail from Fiverr, I was screaming and howling and running around like a hyena.

And… it was just for a $15 project.

But it didn’t matter to me.

That first client changed everything for me.

It proved that it was possible.

Those early mornings and late nights.

They meant something.

I knew from that moment on, I could never work another 9 to 5.

Knowing what was possible with copywriting.

This was it.

This was my new life.

Making internet money.

Being my own boss.

Living whenever, wherever.

Making my own rules.

And creating the life I wanted to live.

Fast-forward 7 years later, and that initial $15 has grown to over $800k in profit from copywriting.

And even more important, I was able to retire my wife and have more time for her and kids than I would have ever had with a 9 to 5.

It wasn’t easy.

But, landing that first client?

It changed everything.
