Life update: 10 years married

Yesterday, I celebrated my 10th anniversary with my beautiful wife, Jenny.

10 years.

I’m not much of an emotional guy…

But yesterday hit hard.

Right before our anniversary dinner at a local winery :)

We spent the whole day celebrating:

  1. We kicked off the day with strawberry crepes + bacon for breakfast

  2. With our bellies full, we did a hike with our sidekicks (2/4 year old daughters)

  3. Next we went shopping for our Italy anniversary trip (heading out next week)

  4. After we dropped the girls off, we indulged in a 3 course set dinner at one of the nicest winery’s in my city, Kelowna

  5. To cap off the night, we surprised our littles with a “Slumber party” at my in-laws place

It was by far my favorite anniversary we’ve ever had.

But it wasn’t just because of all the fun things we did.

More than any other anniversary, we spent the entire day reflecting on the past 10 years together.

The good times.

The bad times.

The wealthy times.

The poor times.

And our journey that brought us to where we are today.

We experienced the highest of highs: marriage, kids, and all the adventures.

But we also experienced the lowest of lows: financial struggle, losing loved ones, and the challenges of “growing up” into adults.

We started as two lost kids just trying to figure out our footing in the world (or at least, we felt like kids at 22 and 24 years old when we got married).

And we grew up into full-blown adults, became responsible for two little ‘mini-me’s’, and found financial freedom.

But it didn’t start that way.

I remember the day after we got married.

After the greatest day of my life, I woke up in a panic.

Overwhelmed with a burden I’ve never felt before:

“I have to provide for a family now. I have to take care of my wife. I’m going to have to take care of kids one day soon.”

I realized the day after my wedding that making $12/hour delivering pizzas down the street wasn’t going to cut it anymore.

I had to grow up.

But if going to university and getting trapped in the 40-year 9 to 5 rat race was growing up, I didn’t want it.

I knew the only option was to build my own business. Be my own boss.

How else would I provide for my family, have the free time to BE with them, and the autonomy to travel the world?

And so I hit the books. Read dozens of business books.

I tried to launch several businesses: dropshipping, ecom, bookkeeping, web development, sales, FB flipping, ebooks, and more.

But, nothing seemed to work out:

  • I invested thousands of dollars.

  • Thousand of hours

  • One year went by

  • Two years

  • Three

We were married for 4 years.

And stuck grinding 12-hour shifts in a dreadful day job.

Living off broken promises from one job to the next. Trying to claim our freedom. Trying to stop living paycheck to paycheck. Trying to get our time back.

One business after the next, I failed. Over and over again, I felt like I failed my wife.

I could have given up.

But I decided to give it one last shot in January 2019.

I decided to give copywriting a chance despite being skeptical.

I couldn’t let my wife down anymore. I kept promising her THIS business would be the one. Dropshipping. Sales. Ebooks.

So I went all in.

Bought the books. Got the courses. Invested in my education.

Woke up early before work to write.

Listened to audiobooks and courses on the way to work.

Handcopied sales letters and ads after work. Did copy exercises and course work before bed.

And committed myself to making it work, despite my lack of time, the stress of my day job, and the mental battles in my mind telling me this business would be another failure.

6 weeks later, I did it. I got my first client.

3 months later, I landed dozens more and quit BOTH of our 9 to 5s.

6 months in, we left on a one-way flight from Vancouver to Sydney, Australia.

7 months in, we were living in Thailand, finally travelling the world, but the money wasn’t where we wanted it to be yet.

And then I landed my first “big client”.

My first $5,000 month.

Next month, $7,000.

Month 12, $9,000.

We knew we’d never have to go back to a 9 to 5 again.

We knew we’d never have to ask for time off again.

We knew we’d never have to worry about money again.

In my second year, my wife got pregnant with our first daughter.

I still remember the day she came down with morning sickness so bad that she couldn’t work anymore.

Being able to confidently tell her, she never had to work again if she didn’t want…

There was no greater feeling than “retiring my wife”. Seeing the stress slip away from her eyes… And realizing how far we’d come.

Fast-forward to 10 years…

And it’s incredible to see how fast it all went.

How far copywriting has taken us.

From lost, confused, and stressed out…

Money poor, time poor, and peace poor.

To within one year… experiencing a 180 degree transformation in both of our lives.

To finally experience the freedom we longed for for years…

To look back at how that one single decision to take a chance on ourselves paid off.

I didn’t know copywriting would work out.

I just knew I was going to be the man my wife deserved. And I didn’t care what it took to make that happen.

I knew I was going to fulfill my vows that I promised to her years before… to provide for her and be the man God called me to be.

I knew that we were one day going to find the freedom and autonomy we were after, and to give our future kids the best of us.

And so I went all in on copywriting, and it worked.

So, no matter where you’re at today…

Whether you’re married with kids like me (but you just don’t have the freedom and autonomy to love and provide for them to the fullest because of your 9 to 5)…

Or you’re wanting to provide for a family one day… and you aren’t sure where to start…

Then just know that if you give copywriting a shot, you can’t lose.

It IS possible to build a life of freedom, money, and autonomy… to reclaim your time, and live the life of your dreams.

And even if you’ve tried before and failed, you can still take that first step all over again today.

No matter where you’re at, all that’s required is you saying “yes” to yourself today. Yes to your dreams. Yes to more money. Yes to more time. Yes to more autonomy. Yes to more freedom. Yes to your family. And yes to your potential.
