I Used Copywriting to Get a Better Condo

How you can use copy in the real world

I touched down in Thailand 6 days ago.

FINALLY over jet lag (I think)…

My wife, two toddlers, and I spent the first few days in Bangkok exploring.

And now?

We flew south to the islands to soak up the sun and the beaches.

My wife and I decided to stick around for a while so we’re going to rent a condo for a month or so.

So, I find some local buy and rent groups on Facebook and write a super short post in there:

“Looking for a 2-3 bedroom to rent…”

And I get a whole WACK of responses.

Houses, townhouses, condos.

This area, that area, pool, no pool, gym, no gym, laundry, no laundry, cats, no cats.

Seriously. One place stated that one of the perks of staying there is that there’s a community cat that lives on site.

And after filtering through about 57 Facebook messages with subpar places, I realized…

Oh wait, I’m a copywriter.

Duh.

I deleted my post

And rewrote it.

In DETAIL.

“Condo. No mold. In THIS area. Kid-friendly. King size bed. 1-3 months. THIS price. No pets. 2 adults. 2 kids. Ready to move in March 1. Can view condo today.”

And a few other very specific details.

Guess what happened to my response rate?

It plummeted.

Barely got any messages after that.

BUT…

The responses I got after that were FANTASTIC

They were only from what I like to call “qualified leads.”

Rather than wasting hours of my time checking listing after listing only to tell people their place is not realllly what I’m looking for…

I did a quick write up with a little more thought, and got top tier responses.

Not only that, but we found OUR place.

So today?

We’re checking out a place with a few available condos in it.

Based on the listing, we already decided it’s where we’re going to live.

Now we just have to pick our unit.

The thing about copywriting is that it isn’t just a way to make money online and create an online business…

Possessing the skill of copywriting is like having a silver bullet in your back pocket — for life

To get what you want, when you want it.

Copy isn’t just about performance and tapping into psychological triggers.

It’s about knowing how to communicate EFFECTIVELY.

My first post was NOT effective communication because I wasn’t looking at it from the lens of a copywriter.

But, when I looked at it from the lens of a copywriter, I got the result I wanted almost immediately.

Knowing how to communicate well is a massive side feature of copywriting.

The benefit? When you can communicate effectively, you will get what you want out of life more frequently.

Rather than being frustrated with your circumstances, simply whip out your newfound copywriting skills and you’ll be amazed at what you can do.

In fact…

This isn’t the first time I’ve used my copy skills in the “real world” (flashback to 2019)

6 years ago, when my wife and I first sold everything in Canada to move to Thailand, I tapped into these same skills.

I remember we had a TON of stuff to sell before we left. It was stressful. We had to get out of our lease. And we had thousands of dollars worth of stuff that wasn’t getting on that plane with us to Bangkok.

So, I created my first ever sales page to present to the tenant that would replace us in our rented condo.

I put everything we owned on it.

Dishes, kitchenware, towels, beach gear, bikes, our furniture, and of course, our bed.

I listed individual prices. Showed pictures.

And I created a bundle price — AKA “You get everything for only X amount.”

So, what happened?

The new tenants bought ALL of our stuff for $1,400!

I would have NEVER been able to do this without learning copywriting.

And remember, I was a brand new copywriter. Maybe 3 months in.

That’s $1,400 of free money that we didn’t have to earn by spending a week of our lives flipping stuff on Facebook Marketplace.

I listed everything and wrote the copy in under 2 hours.

Done.

I’m off to check out the condo units now. Got an appointment in 35 minutes - I’ll share some pics of our new place soon

And in the meantime, don’t forget to practice your copy today.

You never know when it’s going to come in handy in your personal life.

Heck, it might even help you persuade the person of your dreams to marry you (now that would be quite the conversion).
