"I quit. And Jenn's quitting too"

In 2015 I married my best friend.

Not a man.

Not a dog.

But a beautiful girl named Jenny.

And oh how I wanted to give her the world.

The only problem was?

I was a pizza boy making $12/hr down the road at a pizza parlor.

I didn’t even work 40 hours a week.

Before we got married, I lived with my parents, paid a tiny amount in rent, and could barely take care of myself.

How on earth would I take care of her, let alone a family one day?

So, I got to work.

I knew university, college, and 40 years in a traditional 9 to 5 was out of the question for me.

I tried college for a few months years before, but quit 2 months in when I realized I’d rather live in Antarctica in beach shorts than do this for 4 years.

So I went all in on building a business. Got the books. Started learning.

• Tried dropshipping and failed

• Tried bookkeeping and failed

• Tried web development and failed

And a half dozen other businesses.

Eventually, Jenn and I ended up BOTH working at the same place.

And we worked long hours - 8-9 hour days with 2-3 hours commute every day.

Most days we were working 10-12 hours. Sometimes longer.

Wake up at 7 am. Back home at 7 pm.

And we were barely scraping by living in a tiny studio apartment in Vancouver, Canada at the time.

What kind of life was this?

I’ll tell you this much: There’s NO way I was doing this for the next 40 years.

We had to get out.

We had to escape.

We had to make a life for ourselves.

And the only way was with our own business.

So I dove into this weird thing called “copywriting.”

Invested $5,000 into books, courses, and went all in.

A month and a half later, I landed my first client online.

3 months after diving in, I called my boss up:

And I told him I’m quitting. And Jenn’s quitting too. We’re out.

Boom.

Just like that, within 3 short months, we went from hopeless in our dead end jobs…

Slaving away from sunrise to sunset every single day…

• Moved to Da Nang, Vietnam before COVID shut everything down, so we flew back home to Canada

• Eventually moved to the Okanagan Valley (aka the “California of Canada”) full of lush orchards, thousands of vineyards, dozens of lakes, and breathtaking mountains

And since then, I’ve consistently hit $10-$15k months with copywriting which has allowed me to retire my wife Jenny. And we had two little girls we’ve taken on multi-month adventures to Thailand and Italy, and more to come…

How is this all possible?

It’s simple:

I took a chance on myself.

I took a chance on my dreams.

And I decided that I was going to go all in no matter what it took.

A life of adventure, freedom, and extended time with the ones I love was the dream.

And copywriting was the vehicle.

I get it. I’ve been there. I know how it feels.

Did I really want to sacrifice my sleep when I was already exhausted from my day job so I could wake up at 5:30 am and do a morning “power writing session”?

Did I really want to skip out on visiting family temporarily on weekends so I could go through courses and pitch clients?

No. I didn’t. I wanted to have fun.

But I realized the mind-numbing dread of my 9 to 5 eclipsed the fun I was having on evenings and weekends.

Life wasn’t fun anymore. So I decided enough was enough and traded a bad life for a good one.

And it worked.

Within one year of starting as a new copywriter, I was able to quit my job, move halfway around the world, hit my first $9,000 month, and finally start living the life I always dreamed of.

Something I realized years later…

If you really want something, you can’t lose. You’ll find a way to make it work. In fact, you’ll do whatever it takes to succeed. You may stray off course every now and then. You may take a wrong path. You may have ups and downs. But you’ll find your way if you truly want this.

I failed at multiple businesses before copywriting.

I thought I was going to succeed years before then.

It took more work than I anticipated.

But the rewards have been astronomically bigger than I anticipated.

My only regret in life is not starting sooner.
