I just fired my copywriting client

Important lesson here (if you’re a new copywriter)

The other day, I woke up.

Walked over to my wife in our log cabin.

And I told her, “Enough’s enough. I’m letting her go.”

‘Wow, really?’

“Yeah, I’m writing her a message right now.”

So, I wrote up a text, and sent it off to my client.

Done. I ended the relationship with my client.

Sure, that’s four figures in easy repeat income gone now.

But, it’s also a weight lifted off my shoulders.

You see, for the past few months, this client of mine has been easy to work with. But, too easy.

Sounds like there’s no issue here, but in reality, it was. I’d do pretty light email copy and marketing work.

And she’d pay me thousands through a retainer on the 17th of each month.

But…

The problem was that it wasn’t so easy to get ahold of her. And my plans for her business seemed to be bigger than hers. So when I wanted to push growth, it didn’t happen as fast as I wanted (because of poor communication).

In other words, I wanted it more than her.

Now, you may be thinking, “Brandon, what are you talking about?! Just suck it up and take the easy money!”

But, that’s not my style. It was starting to get to me. And I was starting to realize the opportunity cost of working with her - the mental head space, the time (even though it was limited) wasn’t worth it anymore.

So, I let her go.

Now why do I tell you all of this when your biggest issue probably isn’t a “bad” client, but a nonexistent one?

I tell you this story to show you what’s possible with copywriting.

6 years ago, I would have dreamed of having the freedom to “drop” a four-figure retainer. Just to have any monthly check hitting my bank in the thousands when I was brand new.

But you have to understand that the copywriting game is a game of levels.

You have to start at zero:

  • Brand new

  • No skills

  • No clients

  • No experience

  • No income coming in

And you have to grind to gain that experience, slay some rats, before you ever take on a few giants.

As you work on your skills, you’ll climb bigger mountains, take on bigger quests, and level up your armor along the way.

And as you ascend as a copywriter, you reach new levels of income and freedom.

I remember the first time I ever had to let a client go back in July 2019.

I was making about $500 a month from this client.

Something I dreamed of as a brand new copywriter.

But, 7 months in and this $500 was holding me back.

I was writing $20-$30 blog posts for this guy. And while I was thankful for the work, this client (that was my first-ever retainer client)… well, he eventually became my biggest bottleneck as I leveled up as a copywriter.

I was stuck at my income range of under $1,000/month. And I couldn’t take on more clients since I didn’t have the time.

So, the moment I had 2 other clients alongside this guy, I reached out and told him my rates were increasing.

I knew sending that message meant there was a chance he’d say no and I’d be losing 50% of my income.

But I had to move on to move up.

So I sent that message. And he said no. And I let him go, along with $500 per month.

Well guess what happened when I started the next month with $500/month in retainers?

I hit my first $5,000 month.

Because I let that client go (which was a risk)…

I was able to 5x my revenue from $1,000/month to $5,000/month.

I admit, it was scary sending that message to let that client go. And even scarier when he said “no” to paying me more.

But at some point in time, you need to believe in yourself. You need to trust that you’ll reach new heights. And you need to take a chance on you.

If you do take that chance, then you open yourself up not just to a world of new income streams… and the ability to make $5,000, $10,000, and even $15,000+ per month from your laptop…

And you also give yourself the ability to choose.

It gives you the freedom to say “yes” to work you love and “no” to work you don’t.

To choose when you’ll wake up and work. And when you’ll take the day off to hang with your friends, family, and loved ones.

To say “no” to a commute you hate and “yes” to taking that extended vacation you’ve been thinking about for years.
