How To Land a Client in the Next 48 Hours

Why offline always trumps online

Two weeks ago, I landed a new copywriting client.

Yes, that’s right.

I’m not just a copywriting coach.

I still write copy for clients.

2 reasons…

#1 I love writing copy for clients.

It’s fun, easy, and pays reallllly well. Don’t think I’ll ever stop.

#2 It helps me coach you better.

I get to show you what works right now in real time (instead of relying on outdated strategies).

Okay, so back to the new client.

I just signed her.

Well not technically, I rarely do contracts nowadays (that’s a conversation for another day)…

Handshake agreements are much more enjoyable imo.

But, we agreed on an email copy/marketing package.

And she sent the funds.

So we’re in.

How exactly did I land her as a client?

I did it OFFLINE, not online

You see, most new copywriters dream of quickly sweeping internet strangers off their feet.

They dream of those “money clients” that just fork over thousands every month.

  • No pitching

  • No sales calls

  • No having to meet face to face

Just send a quick DM and you’re set.

The problem is?

That’s REALLY hard when you’re brand new

Why?

Because…

You have zero proof.

You have zero trust.

You have zero authority.

In their eyes, you’re a big pile of zeros.

(Don’t worry, I know you’re not a zero. But, we’ve gotta work together to prove it to them).

So, what do you do to increase proof and trust?

You take them from cold to warm.

Rather than sending cold emails and cold DMs to strangers…

Turn strangers into friends first.

Engage with them on social media, send them a DM to start a convo.

Warm. Now you don’t have zero trust. You just increased trust by a little bit. Optimize your social profile and when they sneak a peek at that, you’ve developed a bit more trust. Now we’re getting somewhere.

Rather than going in ICE COLD…

Build common ground. Rapport. And trust. Just do the little things right first and you’ll be amazed at how people will respond to your pitch.

That’s how you do things online. And it’s one of the reasons my copywriting students are landing clients online in 30 days as brand new copywriters.

But…

You wanna know a secret?

Landing clients offline is 100x easier.

Why?

Because of TRUST.

Your ability to quickly generate trust in real life is insane compared to the online world.

Seeing someone in the flesh. Face to face.

There’s a 1% chance you’re an AI robot, a scammer, or spammer.

But when you’re pitching online, people have their defenses up. You need to try harder to penetrate their castle walls and go for the gold.

So, if you want to land a client in 30 days, go warm prospects up online and then pitch them with value.

But…

If you want to land a client in the next 48 hours, go offline

Where do you start?

Friends, family, co-workers.

Go open up your phone.

Look at your contacts.

And start texting away:

  • Go find out who has a business

  • Go ask friends and family members

  • Go find out which of their friends have businesses

And start making connections.

Go start meeting people. Go to entrepreneurial meetups in your city. They’re everywhere.

Networking events, business meetups, you name it. If you’re remotely close to a big city, go take the time to attend them weekly.

And if you’re not in a big city, then your next best option is to start walking into local businesses and starting conversations with business owners.

I landed this client because we interacted face-to-face

In fact, it was a completely coincidental situation. We just started chatting at a friend’s big Christmas dinner. And I gave her some advice on her marketing and her emails.

Next thing you know, she’s asking to meet again, and before you know it, we’re working together.

The best part?

I wasn’t trying to land her as a client. I was just trying to help.

And, I didn’t even show her my portfolio. She didn’t see my results. She didn’t need to see any of that.

Why?

Because the trust and proof I generated through a face to face conversation (where I casually gave her tips on her business)…

That was enough to seal the deal.

So, if you want to land your first (or next) client in the next 48 hours…

Go open up your smartphone. Ignore TikTok and Instagram for a few minutes. And scroll through your contacts app for leads.

Your quickest (and easiest) client acquisition isn’t in the DMs, a cold email, or on Upwork.

It’s in your contacts app. It’s your neighbor next door. It’s your local business down the road.

So, what are you waiting for?

Go get ‘em.
