How to kill imposter syndrome as a copywriter

Here's what I did to crush it as a newbie

New copywriter?

Tell me if these thoughts sound familiar:

“I don’t know if I feel ready yet…”

How will I know if I’m ready to land clients?”

“Is my copy good enough?”

“I feel like a fraud… there are others who have been writing for years...“

“What if they ask me what my experience is?”

“What if they find out I only just started writing?”

Guess what?

This is 100% NORMAL to think these thoughts when you’re a new copywriter.

You feel like a complete fraud.

But, here’s the good news:

So does every other new copywriter.

And… so does anyone who’s brand new to ANYTHING.

I felt the same way 6 years ago.

I know how it feels to be brand new, finally muster up the courage to put yourself out there, and have that FIRST conversation with a potential client.

SCARY.

Almost as bad as speaking in public with nothing but your underwear.

Thankfully, there’s a really simple way to overcome imposter syndrome as a copywriter.

You want to know what it is?

Two things:

  1. Studying the craft more than the next lazy copywriter.

  2. Writing copy more than the next lazy copywriter.

Simple, isn’t it?

The person who feels like an imposter can crush those feelings by simply being more prepared.

If you want to start to feel like an expert…

Acquire some expertise in the craft!

Learn how to write headlines. How to write hooks. Understand copy frameworks like AIDA and PAS inside and out. Know how to piece together a sales page, email, or ad.

Get familiar with copywriting software. Pick a specialty, pick a niche, and OWN that lane!

Become so hyper focused on mastering copy that it pours out of you when you speak with clients.

Now, to fast track things, it’s easy:

  • Read copy books every day (Adweek, Cashvertising, Copywriting Secrets are all great starting points)

  • Study high-performing copy and apply their tactics to your own copy

  • Watch YouTube videos (check out mine if you haven’t yet — I’ve got plenty of tutorials, step-by-steps, free mini courses, and practical advice on building this business up fast)

  • Take courses - structured, comprehensive step-by-step training with assignments and copy tools to get you up to speed fast

  • Hire a coach and get copy feedback (from six-figure copywriters) who have already achieved what you want to achieve

Don’t be scared of clients.

Be scared of showing up unprepared.

The best way to overcome this is by getting GOOD at copywriting fast.

Clients don’t care as much as you think about someone being too “new.” What they care about is someone who knows more than them and has the confidence to get them results.

So today, go study the craft more.

If you haven’t gone through it yet, watch my mini course on how to learn copywriting fast in 2025:

P.S. This course is just a teaser of what’s coming in a few weeks (a new paid copywriting course focused specifically on copy training… Keep an eye out in your inbox).
