How to Find Your Niche with Upwork
Here's how to find your angle.
Hey friend! Welcome to Storey Time. If you were forwarded this email, add your email below to make sure you receive my next issue in your inbox.
Struggling to figure out your offer?
I'm not Alex Hormozi.
I don't have a clue about $100 million offers.
I'm also not jacked (though I do have long hair).
But, I have made a living online for a few years.
And that's only possible when you specialize and niche as a writer.
Here's how to find yours unique angle as a writer:
Without a specific angle, you're screwed as a writer.
You'll spend months wasting away.
Zero clients.
Zero money.
Zero hope.
Rather than guessing what service to sell, try this…
(Even if you already have your skill picked out)
Don’t guess what to sell to clients.
Let the market tell you.
Here's a proven tactic:
Upwork.
It’s one of the biggest freelance marketplaces in the world.
Over 5 million businesses are there.
Every day, millions of dollars are being handed to ambitious entrepreneurs...
Just.
Like.
You.
I'm not here to convince you to use Upwork to get hired.
But... I am going to share a sneaky little secret with you.
To help you find your niche and specialty -- with the platform.
In 10 seconds you can browse thousands of jobs.
→And, you don’t need to make an account.
1. Go to Upwork's site.
2. Head to “Find Work.”
3. Type in “writing” or “writer.”
4. Then dive into the goldmine.
You’ll find real job listings...
From real clients all around the world...
Paying real money to strangers just like you.
One of the hardest parts when starting out is figuring out what specific services you should offer.
Even if you have a skill, what the heck are you supposed to do?
So, you’re a writer. Now what?
“Hire me to write for you” isn’t gonna cut it.
So, you’re a copywriter. Now what?
“Hire me to do copy for you” also isn’t gonna cut it.
So you’re an email copywriter. Now what?
“Hire me and I’ll write your emails” won’t work either.
You need to offer a specific service.
How do you figure out what that is?
Just look at what people want.
The money will flow wherever the market tells it to go.
Legendary copywriter Gary Halbert (the Michael Jordan of copy) explained this concept in his infamous Boron Letters.
He once asked some copywriting students what kind of competitive advantage would you like if you owned a hamburger stand?
Their answers included:
Superior meat
Sesame seed buns
A great location
Lowest prices
Gary Halbert told the students the single most important advantage he would want:
“A STARVING CROWD!”
Rather than try to guess what kind of writing you should offer to the world, instead look first at what the market is demanding.
Look what the market wants. And then, give it to them!
Upwork (and other platforms) is just people literally throwing money out to the world and saying,
“Give me this SPECIFIC thing. You can TAKE my money.”
Look at this… 4,042 freelance writing jobs!
And… they’re all so unique.
Look for patterns. Look for new angles. Look for different types of copy people are requesting (i.e. ads, emails, blog posts, social media copy, ebook writing, etc.)
And then, look for niches (i.e. fitness, pets, finance, relationships, B2B, etc.).
You’ll quickly start to get ideas on what kind of copywriter you should be.
The goal is to pick a writing specialty (i.e. ads) and niche (i.e. fitness).
To become: A fitness ad copywriter.
You don't need to find clients on Upwork.
(Though I've earned thousands with it)
But...
Just go on there and look at what people want.
What they're paying people real money for.
Don’t guess what your offer should be.
Offer what people are paying for.
And... you’ll earn plenty.
For years to come.
Guaranteed.
