Don't Try to Land Clients Before Doing THIS
You're wasting your time
Good morning from Bangkok!
I no longer wear pants.
I no longer wear sweaters.
I no longer wear winter boots.
And it feels good.
Don’t worry, I’m still wearing clothes. I just traded them for shorts, t-shirts, and sandals.
My Bangkok “office” today
And while I’m feeling more comfortable than ever relaxing in my 25 degree C hotel lobby at 6:37 am while sipping an espresso (and writing this email)…
Something has been making me feel very uncomfortable lately.
You know what it is?
New copywriters who start trying to land clients TOO soon.
You see…
Every day, I get questions from copywriters asking why they aren’t landing clients:
“I’m sending 50+ outreaches per day”
“I reach out to them on Instagram, cold email, and follow up 5 times”
“I’m even following your Sniper Bomb method (warm DM outreach), but it’s still not working”
So, being a loving doctor with a masters in copy, I start diagnosing their sickness.
👨🏻⚕️
And I can usually find the problem about 33% of the time with this one question:
“How much time do you spend writing copy every day?”
And you know what they usually say?
“What? No, I’m not talking about writing copy. I’m talking about landing clients.”
And… I respond…
“I understand that. So how much time do you write copy every day?”
And… they usually respond…
“Brandon, I’m trying to outreach but no one’s answering my pitches, people ghost me, and I’ve been at this for months. I don’t need help with copy, I need help with outreach.”
And… I repeat:
“Got it, so are you writing copy for at least 30-60 minutes per day?”
And… then the answer finally arrives:
“Well, I’ve just been focusing on outreach these days. I spend hours on it. But I maybe write for 10 minutes a few times a week. It’s just hard to balance, you know.”
There it is.
The real reason most people aren’t landing clients isn’t how often they’re outreaching… or even how they’re outreaching.
It’s because they haven’t developed their copywriting skill yet.
And they treat this like another “online side hustle.”
They treat this like, “If I could just land one client, that would solve everything.”
But that’s not the way this works.
Just think about this logically…
What kind of business owner would drop thousands of dollars on somebody who spends 10 minutes per day (or every other day) on a skill?
If your toilet broke down and was flooding your home, would you feel confident in a plumber who doesn’t spend time… plumbing??
I wouldn’t. Not only would I not trust him, but there’s no way I’m paying him any money.
The same is true for you as a copywriter.
You can’t expect to earn thousands of dollars if you aren’t willing to build your skill up first.
And if you started outreaching in your first week because some YouTube gurus told you it’s just that easy, I don’t blame you. But they’re giving terrible advice (that will cause months of unnecessary frustration).
If you want to be a six-figure copywriter…
You have to build the skills worth six figures.
And if you’re not practicing daily for at least 30-60 minutes, you’re wasting your time.
If you can’t commit that time to writing copy now…
How are you going to be able to commit to writing copy for your first client?
Or your second?
How are you going to manage 3+ clients at once?
Keep in mind, you can build your copywriting business up so you can make $100,000+ per year in 3-4 hours per day…
But that ain’t gonna happen right away. It’s going to take time to build up to that.
Right now, while you’re building, you need to be willing to grind and put in the work.
If a client sees your copy samples and they suck, it doesn’t matter how much you impress them in the DMs leading up to that.
And if you somehow convince someone to pay you (despite being a subpar copywriter)…
You won’t be able to keep them around for month two (which puts you back on the client acquisition hamster wheel).
So, if you want to land clients…
Don’t sacrifice time writing copy.
Your time spent today doing power writing sessions, handcopying sales letters, practicing specialized copy, studying courses and books, and leveling up your skills…
It’s not a waste.
It’s the best thing you could be doing to land clients fast.
