Case Study: 30x'd Email Marketing Growth for a New Client

Why email copy is good, but email marketing is better

You can make good money as an email copywriter.

But you can make GREAT money as an email marketer.

For when I’m just writing the copy for a client, I’ll make about $1,500-$4,000 per month per client.

But, when I’m doing email copy and email marketing, I’ll make about $3,000-$8,000 per month per client.

Basically twice as much.

I’ll show you how to do the same, starting with a quick case study with a new client.

Here’s a quick breakdown of how I 30x’d a client’s email list growth rate in a few days.

So, I landed a new copywriting client a few weeks ago.

She’s got an audience of 300,000+ on social media.

But, her email list is super small — about 7,000 subscribers.

For context (memorize this stat if you are an email copywriter)…

The average business should have at least 5-10% of their social media audience on their email list.

That’s healthy.

So, if you have 100,000 social media followers…

You should have about 5,000-10,000 email subscribers.

If you don’t, you’re doing something wrong and there’s a LEAK in your marketing funnel.

So my new client doesn’t have 10%.

Or even 5%.

She only has 2% of her social following on her email list. This is unhealthy.

But, she’s bringing in solid revenue despite this. This is an opportunity gap. So I’m helping her capitalize on it.

And I immediately see low hanging fruit:

  • No email signup call to action on her YouTube video description (her main social channel)

  • No email signup CTA on her YouTube pinned comment (there wasn’t even a pinned comment)

  • No email signup CTA on her YouTube “homepage” links

  • She’s on Mailchimp (bad idea overall - beehiiv or Kit is a better idea)

  • Her Mailchimp forms are broken on her site

  • Her Mailchimp forms have bad, generic copy

  • She has no paid subscriber acquisition set up

So I switched her to beehiiv, fixed all her signup forms, set up beehiiv Boosts (paid subscriber acquisition), and her list started growing (she was stagnant before this).

But, the quickest win came 2 days ago when I hit up her YouTube - description, pinned comment, home page with CTA links to her newsletter signup landing page.

Within 2 minutes of adding the CTAs, she gained 10 new subscribers.

Within 24 hours, she gained about 50 new subscribers.

For context, her email list only grew by ~60 subscribers in the previous 30 days before I came onboard.

So I nearly matched her 30 day growth rate in 24 hours.

At this rate, she’ll grow by ~1,500 subscribers this month if I do nothing else for growth.

A lot better than 60.

That’s 21.4% growth month over month.

And… if we maintain that for 12 months, we’ll take her from 7,000 subscribers to 25,000.

Which gets us a lot closer to our healthy goal range of 5-10% (15,000-30,000).

Why does it matter if she has 7,000 subscribers or 30,000?

The average ROI of email is 36:1 (another stat to memorize) whereas social media is roughly 5:1.

Email subscribers are incredibly valuable to a business - they’re way hotter leads than social media (and more likely to be buyers). More subscribers almost always equates to more revenue per month.

So if you have a small list, it doesn’t matter how good your copy is.

Pitching 100 email subscribers with the greatest copy of all time ain’t gonna do much. Pitching 100,000 people is 1000x the scale.

Remember… when you understand how to write copy well, you’ll get paid well.

But, when you also know how the marketing works behind the copy (and know how to pull that lever), you’ll get paid realllly well since your copy will be able to reach its full potential within a business.

The result is extra $$$ for the business owner (and $$$ for the marketing wiz who made it happen — you)
