3 Silver Bullets to Land Clients As a Beginner
Prove you're worth hiring
There are 59 million freelancers in the U.S.
Yet... many beginner copywriters struggle to land clients.
Why?
One reason: trust.
Here are three silver bullets you can use to increase trust (and land more clients):
1. Samples
Show them your work.
More than anything, a client wants to see that you’ve done the work before.
The closer your samples are to what they’re looking for, the better.
They don’t care about a degree.
They care about WORK experience.
They want to see that you've done it before.
So, show them.
2. Results
Most of the time, a client is after a specific result.
And, news flash:
They’re not typically looking for someone to write them silly stories for fun.
They want something your writing provides.
That might be:
Increasing email signups with a landing page
Converting a prospect on a product page
Getting more leads with a lead magnet
Growing search traffic via blog posts
Generating revenue with email
Engaging with leads on X
Remember, business owners don't want writers.
They want to grow their business.
Show results of how your writing has taken a client from point A to point B.
That will help you land more clients.
3. Testimonials
Are you a bot?
A scammer?
A fraud?
A liar?
No?
Well, chances are, the person you’re pitching probably has those thoughts running through their mind about you.
You need to settle the scary voices in their head.
You’re a stranger on the internet.
You could be anyone.
Even an AI bot.
They need proof that you’re not a crazy person.
One way to overcome this is with testimonials.
Get testimonials from your clients.
Always ask them for one once you’ve done the work (if they’re happy with it).
Plaster them on your website/socials and be ready to hand them directly to a prospect.
Social proof is everything when landing clients.
Secret tip... if you can get a video testimonial from your past clients, it’s even better proof.
Hard to fake that.
BONUS Bullets
Here are a few random trust builders that will also help you land clients.
These all work together to build a case that you’re not a nut job, but can actually do what you say you do:
The ultimate form of proof is when you combine all three of the tips above (sample, result, testimonial) into a CASE STUDY. Nothing beats this.
Here are a few more trust builders:
Social media — You don’t have to post on all of them. But, make sure you have a profile set up on Instagram/X/LinkedIn and post once/week.
Your following — Beyond having a social profile set up, if you can show you have some followers, it’s a solid trust signal. It's not the most important factor though. My students are landing clients with only 50-300 followers on average.
Your own blog/newsletter — Proof that you know how to implement your writing beyond a Google Doc. Plus, it’s a live portfolio. Show them results of traffic, etc. and that’s a double whammy.
Website — this isn’t actually the most critical piece of proof. But, it’s still another trust signal.
Your face — Yes. Your face. Plaster it all over the internet via social/website - pictures, videos, whatever. You’re more likely to be a real person who knows what they’re doing if you show your face. Get a professional headshot done. And smile. Believe it or not, people like working with friendly-looking people.
Video calls –– This follows the last tip. Prove yourself in a video call with a potential client. Send prospects a Loom video when outreaching. Show your face in videos via social media or on your website. It increases trust (and builds rapport).
If you want to generate more clients, you need to first generate trust.
Clients want proof that you’re the right person for the job.
There are dozens of ways to show prospects proof as mentioned above.
If you're not making $5k+/month yet and you're struggling to land clients...
Stack up these bullets in your inventory. Every little bit counts.
Go and prove you’re the person worth hiring today.
