3 keys to hit $5k/mo as an email copywriter in 2025
Practical, juicy tips you can apply right away
Everybody and their DOG wants to become an email copywriter in 2025.
But… if you want to beat the competition and land some clients…
You need to build up the right skills (and craft the right strategy).
Here are 3 tips you need to follow to hit $5,000+/month as an email copywriter this year.
(Why listen to me? Well, I’ve been an email copywriter for 6 years, I’ve generated $1 million in revenue for clients… And earned $575,000+ in the process).
Let’s begin…
#1 Study Storytelling
"Let me tell you a story…"
How do you feel when you hear those six words?
They’re like magic.
Everyone loves a good story.
It’s the reason we can binge-watch 4 episodes of a random Netflix show on a random Tuesday night.
It’s the reason the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy has generated $2.9 billion in revenue.
And why J.K. Rowling has a billion-dollar net worth.
It’s also the reason why some of the top copywriters in the world like Gary Halbert, Eugene Schwartz, and David Ogilvy made hundreds of millions as copywriters.
They all mastered storytelling...
#1 You can use storytelling to hook people in.
#2 You can use it to slide people down the slippery slope.
#3 You can use it to turn a hard “NO” into an absolute yes when it comes time to buy.
Here are a few ways to integrate storytelling to sell more:
The founder story
Customer stories
“Me, them, you” framework
The “Me, them you” framework combines the founder story and the customer story.
Here’s how it works:
I had [problem].
Then, I discovered/created [product].
After that, I [outcome].
Now others have [outcome].
You can have the same [outcome].
Me, them, you.
Works like a charm.
#2 Master The Welcome Series
Want to know the #1 most important email you can send?
A welcome email.
Want to know what business owners usually screw up?
Their welcome email.
If you can master the welcome email, you’ll have an offer for business owners right out of the gate.
Also, most business owners only send out a single welcome email. This is a HUGE missed opportunity.
Why?
A welcome email has the highest open rate of any email on average. At 63.91%, the vast majority of your new subscribers will read this one email.
First impressions count.
A welcome email series introduces you, your brand, and your products to your audience.
Most of all, it’s a way to build a relationship with your audience.
And… get them hooked on your emails.
I once wrote a 12-email welcome series for a client.
It ended up generating over $300,000 in revenue over 3 years.
A solid welcome series can be the greatest automated money machine for any business.
Here are a few tips to master a welcome email series:
Introduce yourself immediately (“Hi, welcome to xxx, my name is yyy”)
Tell your subscribers the benefit of reading each email
Tell them how often they should expect to receive the emails
Give a call to action in every single email
Send minimum 3 emails (ideally 5+)
And some more...
Use a P.S. at the end of each email hinting at the next one in the series
Include the founder story (especially if there’s a transformation related to the product)
Include at least one customer or client transformation story
Incorporate free value, lead magnets, practical tips throughout the series
Add an offer in the final email(s)
Knowing how to write a welcome email series gives you an immediate offer you can pitch a client with.
Master the most important email. Know how to write a full series. You can make plenty of cash with them.
#3 Learn How to Use Email Software
Trying to become a $5-10k/month email copywriter?
One of the most overlooked aspects of building up your business?
Software.
Knowing how to use email software is going to help you a ton.
If you try to pitch someone, and they ask about your experience with beehiiv, Kit, or Klaviyo…
You should have an answer.
Why?
Because a lot of email clients you’ll sign won’t just want you to write the emails in a Google Doc.
They’ll also want you to implement it in their software.
Here are 3 popular platforms:
Kit
beehiiv
Klaviyo (ecommerce)
If you aren’t sure how to use one…
Then start your own newsletter.
Start getting familiar with the email tool.
Every email platform will have tutorials you can follow to learn the ins and outs.
By learning the basics of using an email tool, you’ll not only learn the practical knowledge (which you can use to juice up your email copy offer)...
But, you’ll also gain a ton of confidence you can take with you on a call with a potential client.
